Schools must take students, workers safety more seriously —Expert

As incidence of kidnapping and abduction of people continues to rise in the country and schools becoming soft targets of attack, Chief Executive Officer of SSV Protection Services Limited, Mr. Felix Olorunda has stressed the need for schools to be more sensitive and vigilant to the security situation around them.

He said it was only in a well-secured school that meaningful teaching and learning that would transform into socio-economic prosperity could take place not only in Nigeria but also in other countries of the world.

Olorunda, a security expert and retired military personnel explained that was why every school either publicly or privately-owned in both urban and remote communities is required to build and sustain a culture of safety awareness that would give adequate protection to lives and property in their possession.

According to him, students, workers and visitors to schools need to be physically and psychologically secured in and around schools to be able to function in their respective duties optimally.

He disclosed that was why SSV Protection Services Limited would be coming up with a day seminar in Lagos for school owners, administrators, policy makers, security personnel and other stakeholders in the sector.

The seminar with the theme: “Building a safer school environment,” according to him, is billed to hold at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka in November.

Olurunda noted in a press statement that the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG in charge of academic and research, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, is a keynote speaker.

He added that Colonel Nojeem Shobo (retd) who is a former Chief Security Officer of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, and Mr. Adebayo Akinade, Director-General, Institute of Security. Nigeria would also make presentations at the event.

Olorunda said participants would be exposed to various things including those considered not to be important in the business of security and emergency crisis management in line with best global practice.

Conte: Chelsea must learn to kill matches

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says his side must learn to kill off matches quicker following their 3-2 League Cup win over Bristol Rovers. Michy Batshuayi scored two goals either side of a Victor Moses strike at Stamford Bridge to send the home side into the third round, but they were given a fright when the visitors twice halved a two-goal deficit through Peter Hartley and an Ellis Harrison penalty. The victory is Conte's third in competitive matches as Chelsea boss, following 2-1 wins over West Ham and Watford in the Premier League - both of which came about thanks to late goals from Diego Costa. And the former Italy boss wants his players to become more ruthless in their approach in order to prevent similarly nervy encounters in future. "These games are very tough," he told BBC Radio London Sport. "When you dominate the game, you must kill the game. In this case, we didn't do this. "It's a pity because when you're playing very well, creating a lot...
