Shock, anxiety greet Trump’s election

The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States shocked the world yesterday, even though it portended a huge potential to reshape it. Leaders offered congratulations to either Trump or to the United States, but the distinctions in their messages were momentous. President Muhammadu Buhari and other world leaders have reacted to the surprise election of Donald Trump as the 45th U.S. President. President Buhari in a statement congratulated Trump, saying he looked forward to strengthening the already established friendly relations between both countries, including cooperation on many shared foreign policy priorities, such as the fight against terrorism, peace and security, economic growth, democracy and good governance. W/Cup qualifier: Eagles aim at 9th win over Algeria

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will walk onto the pitch of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday on superior ground against the Desert Foxes of Algeria. There have been 17 clashes between both teams (all at competitive level), with Nigeria winning eight times, drawing three and losing six. And Nigeria captain, Mikel Obi, was less than three years old the last time Algeria defeated Nigeria, in the final of the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Algiers. Super Eagles’ current goalkeepers’ trainer, Aloysius Agu, was the Eagles’ goalkeeper and captain that day, March 16, 1990. It was a tough game at the July 5 Stadium in Algiers, but the Desert Foxes won their first (and still only) Africa title when Sherif Oudjani’s long range effort beat Agu for the only goal of the match. At that same competition, Algeria had beaten the Eagles 5-1 in the opening match. But the Eagles would remember that and pay back the Algerians when lashing their hosts 5-2 in Oran in a 2006 World Cup qua...

NFF loses N2.16bn CAF prize money

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is losing $5,400,000USD (about N2.16billion) Confederation of African Football (CAF) prize monies for Nigeria’s non-participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Gabon and the continental cadet championships. New prize monies for its elite tournaments released by CAF yesterday, show that winners of the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, will apart from lifting the trophy, pocket $4millionUSD as against the previous $1.5m prize money. Super Eagles were stopped by the Pharaohs of Egypt from landing in Gabon, after also failing to be at the AFCON finals in Equatorial Guinea in 2015, to defend Nigeria’s title won in 2013 in South Africa under late Coach Stephen Keshi. Similarly, an otherwise genial Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winning coach, Coach Emmanuel Amuneke, was carried away by his success and allowed his team to revolt on the eve of a crucial qualifier, thus Nigeria failed to qualify for the Africa U-20 Championship holding in Z...

Reps warn Nigerians against investing in MMM commission’s

House of Representatives has warned Nigerians to desist from investing in the Mavrodi Monrodi Moneybox scheme popularly known as MMM or risk loss of their funds. The call was sequel to a unanimous adoption of a motion by Rep. Saheed Akinade-Fajabi (Oyo-APC) at plenary on Wednesday in Abuja. Akinade-Fajabi, in the motion earlier, said the scheme was set up by three Russian nationals in 1989 and that clients were made to invest monies with the hope to make 30 per cent interest in 30 days. He said the structure and operations of the scheme indicated otherwise as clients could have multi-level structures under them and earn bonus. He said the scheme prided itself as a mutual fund through which recruited clients contributed money in form of assistance without any intent to engage in banking business. According to the lawmaker, the scheme entered Nigeria in 2016, capitalising on the high-level unemployment and poverty in the country to deceive and make Nigerians fall prey of their antics. ...

Nigeria’ll be agric powerhouse by 2026 —EU official

An official of European Union (EU), Mr John Clarke, has projected Nigeria to be an agricultural powerhouse within 10 years given the entrepreneurial spirit of the people and abundant land. Clarke, who is the director, International and Bilateral Relations of EU, made the prediction at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) International Investment Conference in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the conference was part of the activities marking the 30th Lagos International Trade Fair organised by the chamber slated for Nov. 4 to 13. Clarke said, “Positive policies geared toward attracting investment into the agricultural sector will make the projection a reality.” He said local and foreign investments in the sector would create a stable alternative to the pattern of economic migration. “Sadly, we see so many young people leaving the country; with the investment, Nigeria can produce foods for its own budding population, earn export through regional and global t...

Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO Plc, said it is cooperating fully with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, concerning the recently drug issues of some of its staff at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja. The NDLEA also said that the fifth suspect, Victor Ahenje, a Load Controller who was also linked with the crime was on the run. TB Joshua had told his congregation on Sunday that he “saw” a woman winning. A section of that ‘prediction’ which was posted on his Facebook page is no longer available. House of Reps: Arrest MMM Promoters

The House of Representatives on Wednesday asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria to immediately go after the promoters Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox, otherwise known as ‘MMM’ in Nigeria. Lawmakers strongly opposed the investment scheme, which lately gained popularity among Nigerians in the wake of the current economic recession in the country. MMM promises 30 per cent return on investment for any money put into the scheme within 30 days. The investment scheme has a Russian origin and “involves directing clients to make money available for an anonymous person with a promise of 30 per cent return within one month.” But, members described the scheme as a “scam” and warned Nigerians not to be carried away by the “mouth-watering” returns on investments. Lawmakers warned that the “trick” used by the operators was to attract as many Nigerians as possible to invest substantial amounts of money before the bubble would burst. The House directed the EFCC...

Aguero reveals Messi 'fury' after Man City defeat

Sergio Aguero admits Lionel Messi was “furious” after Barcelona were beaten by Manchester City, but denied that Fernandinho was involved in any tunnel bust-up. It was claimed in the hours after City’s 3-1 Champions League victory last week that an unnamed player provoked Messi as he made his way off the pitch, which led to the Argentine storming towards the home dressing room. It was later suggested by Brazilian media that Fernandinho was the player in question, while Spanish reports pointed the finger at City coach Mikel Arteta. Pep Guardiola later said it was “impossible” that either Arteta or Fernandinho could have been the guilty parties, while Fernandinho himself denied the claims on Twitter. Aguero, one of Messi’s closest friends, admits that something had flustered the Barcelona No.10, but did not say who, if anybody, was responsible. Nothing happened. It was one of those things between players, but with nobody in particular" he told ESPN Radio FC. "Leo, obviously ...

Trump win ‘opens period of uncertainty’ -Hollande

French President Francois Hollande, who once said Donald Trump made him want to retch, warned Wednesday that the Republican billionaire’s stunning victory in the US election “opens a period of uncertainty.” In a televised address, Hollande underlined that the United States was a key partner for business, for solving wars in the Middle East and tackling global warming — something Trump has dismissed as a hoax. “This American election opens a period of uncertainty,” he said in a statement that offered only brief congratulations to the Republican billionaire. As well as France keeping up its global role, “this context calls for a united Europe, capable of making itself heard and of promoting policies wherever its interests or its values are challenged,” he said. Hollande, who has disastrous approval ratings ahead of France’s presidential election next year, has been an outspoken critic of Trump and in October had predicted a victory for Hillary Clinton. In the wake of a feud between the...

We’re paying for past mistakes- Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday blamed the harsh economic situation currently faced by Nigerians on the mistakes the country made in the past. The President spoke shortly after inaugurating the Edo University, Iyamho in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State as part of his two-day official visit to the state. Markets, dollar plunge as Trump takes White House

Share markets plunged Wednesday and the dollar tumbled against the yen and the euro as Donald Trump was elected US president, in a stunning upset with major implications for the world economy. The Mexican peso also fell to a record low as safe-haven assets soared, with gold rising more than five percent and German government bonds rallying. Fears about the impact on financial markets led Japanese and South Korean authorities to call crisis talks. Initial confidence that market favourite Hillary Clinton would win vanished as results showed the firebrand tycoon picking up the major scalps needed to take the White House. After he won a swathe of states, Clinton called Trump to concede, handing him the keys to the White House. Markets have been plunged into turmoil as Clinton was considered by many investors to be a safer bet than Trump, who is seen as a loose cannon with policies many fear could wreck the world’s number-one economy. “It’s been a bloodbath in the markets over the last ...

France’s Le Pen congratulates Trump

Israeli Education Minister Naftali Bennett said Wednesday the idea of a Palestinian state was over after Donald Trump’s election as US president, calling for an end to what has been the basis of years of negotiations. “Trump’s victory is an opportunity for Israel to immediately retract the notion of a Palestinian state in the centre of the country, which would hurt our security and just cause,” Bennett, who heads the hardline Jewish Home party, said in an apparent reference to the occupied West Bank. “This is the position of the president-elect … The era of a Palestinian state is over.” Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, also of Jewish Home, called on Trump to follow through on his promise to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, in a break with the consistent policy of successive administrations, Republican as well as Democrat. Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, also called for the embassy to be moved, as...
