Duterte maintains Filipino-Sino ties

Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte, yesterday left no room for doubt about where his allegiance lies as he commenced his State Visit to China, announcing what he calls his country’s military and economic separation from the United States. Rodrigo Duterte “America has lost now. I have realigned myself in your ideological flow,” he told the Chinese government officials at a business forum in Beijing. “Maybe I will also go to Russia to talk to Putin and tell him that there are three of us against the world: China, Philippines and Russia. It’s the only way,” he added. Relations between China and the Philippines had soured over a territorial dispute in the South China Sea. But Duterte is taking a different tack, pushing that issue to the background as he tries to forge closer ties with China. A political science professor at De La Salle University, Manila, Richard Javad Heydarian, said it looked like a great gamble. “The usually brash and outspoken Duterte appeared much more states...

Emulate Buhari, African leaders tasked

Northern youths under the aegis of Arewa Youth Leaders Forum (AYLF) has challenged African leaders to emulate President Muhammadu Buhari in winning the war against corruption. The group’s National President, Alhaji Abubakar Abubakar, said in a statement yesterday that many African leaders lacked what was required to move any democratic society forward, even as he urged Nigerians to rally the Buhari administration to move Nigeria forward. Abubakar commended Buhari for the latter’s towering credentials in the war against terrorism and extremism that has manifested in the release of 21 Chibok girls and other persons held hostage by the Boko Haram terror group. “Most of the now infrequent attacks are on soft targets, which justifies the confidence Nigerians have in the ability of the military leadership to curtail and turn the tide quickly in line with Mr. President’s directives as Commander-in-Chief,” the statement said. “No doubt, several things are wrong. A lot of things can be better....

The candidates declined to shake hands before and after the political sparring, setting the tone for another debate marked by shouting and interrupting. But Trump appealed to the Republican establishment by vowing to appoint Supreme Court justices with a “conservative bent” who would overturn a key ruling that made abortion legal in the US and protect gun rights. He also stuck to his pledge to deport undocumented immigrants and secure US...
