Why antibiotics are not working

Andy’s typhoid infection had remained persistent for three years despite continuous antibiotic intake. He had always gone for widal test each time he felt the symptoms which were fever, headache, abdominal discomfort, bitter mouth and sometimes back pain, and the results are always positive for typhoid fever. Up until now, Andy has taken a total of 40 antibiotics injections from hospitals, plus self medications with countless packs of amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, co-trimoxazole and ciprotab yet, it appears the infection has grown resistant and persistent. Right now there are indications that the infection has also affected his liver. Andy’s predicament is not uncommon to many with diverse bacterial infections that have remained resistance to treatment, ranging from sexually transmitted infections such as staphylococcus aureus, gonorrhea, pneumonia down to the common malaria fever. Report by experts indicate that virtually all antibiotics in the West African sub region are becoming le...

Appeal Court Declines To Rule On PDP Crisis

A ruling of the Court of Appeal expected to be delivered on Tuesday afternoon has been suspended. Court officials told journalists at the court premises that the ruling was suspended following a petition against the judges accusing them of bias. No new date has been fixed for the ruling. Two factions of the party led by former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi, and former Borno State governor, Ali Sheriff, have for months battled in court over the leadership of the PDP. As part of that battle, the faction led by Mr. Makarfi had approached the Appeal Court to seek nullification of previous decisions by a Federal High Court presided over by Okon Abang which has affected that faction’s candidate for the November 26 election in Ondo state. Mr. Abang had on October14 given an order in furtherance of his June 29 decision where he had asked the Independent National Electoral commission, INEC, to recognise the faction led by Mr. Sheriff. In his October 14 ruling, Mr. Abang nu...

Ekiti PDP chieftain joins APC, says ‘Fayose’s intolerant’

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Capt. Sunday Ebenezer Adebomi, has stated that Governor Ayo Fayose’s  personality and alleged autocratic  policies left him with no choice than to dump the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC) . The Ise-Orun-born politician, while fielding questions from a cross section of journalists  in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State Capital on Thursday,  described the state PDP as Fayose’s  personal business. "Fayose ‘s style of governance can best be  described as  autocratic.” He lamented that Fayose wants to be everything; the centre of attraction. He wants to be seen as the  lord of everything . It is quite unfortunate that Fayose now runs the PDP as his personal business.  He runs down virtually all those he felt are better than him, such cannot  be accepted by well meaning Ekiti  people.” The serving captain in the United States Army bemoaned his loss at the 2014 primaries w...

Obanikoro’s N40m Refund Cheque To EFCC Bounces

N40 million check issued to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by Former Minister of State for Defense Musiliu Obanikoro has bounced. Mr. Obanikoro, who returned from the U.S. two weeks ago and surrendered to the anti-corruption agency following one year on the run, wrote several checks to the EFCC to fulfill his promise to refund part of the N4.7 billion laundered through him and his son to finance the election of Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State in 2014. Mr. Obanikoro, also a former ambassador to Ghana, admitted to embezzling N800m of the funds and promised to refund all of it. The initial agreement with EFCC investigators was for the former minister to refund N100m as a condition for his bail from custody. However, two weeks after his detention, Mr. Obanikoro has only succeeded in paying back N24m. He then issued a series of checks to the recovery account of the federal government last week, but EFCC operatives detailed to process the checks discovered that ...

FG yet to fullfil promise to Discos – ANED

The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors on Tuesday projected that the electricity market revenue would record an N809.8bn shortfall by December. The Executive Director, Research and Advocacy, ANED, Mr. Sunday Oduntan, who disclosed this at a news conference organised by the association in Lagos, said that the federal government had not fulfilled its commitment to the agreement it signed with the investors during the privatisation of the sector in 2013. Oduntan said this projected shortfall was based on the non-cost recovery nature of the tariff. He said that within the last three years that the sector had been privatised, the Discos had been operating at a loss. He said that due to the delay in the implementation of Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO ll) covering from December 2013 to February 2016, the Discos recorded a N12.8bn shortfall. The executive director said that government had not fulfilled its commitment to the agreement it signed with the investors during the priva...

All is now set for Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, to appear in the ongoing trial of his former NSA, Col Dasuki, to testify in favour of the former NSA. He had earlier faulted the charges slammed on Dasuki, claiming that the ex-NSA could not have stolen $2.2billion. He was quoted to have said, “We bought warships, we bought aircraft, and we bought lots of weapons for the army. It’s not possible that he stole $2.1 billion.” The ex-NSA’s counsel, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), said Tuesday that, “Dr. Goodluck Jonathan will testify in court. He is one of those who will testify and that the statement he made in London appears to be the first phase of the war chest of the ex-NSA.” “You know the ex-NSA said he acted on Jonathan’s instructions in disbursing some of the cash, and from the look of things, the ex-President is now ready to accept responsibility for whatever Dasuki did. So far, we have secured the consent of Jonathan to appear in court for Dasuki. This will make the tr...
