No room for ‘vacation players’ in Eagles camp –Rohr

As the Super Eagles prepare for the November 12 Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier against the Desert Warriors of Algeria in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the teams’ technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has announced that he will no longer invite players he describes as “vacation players” because they have failed to fight for first-team places after two invitations.

“Some players have been invited for two matches namely; the Nations Cup qualifier against Tanzania and the World Cup qualifier against Zambia in Ndola which the Super Eagles won 2-1 but were unable to pick first team shirt on both occasions and we cannot keep on inviting them. Now, we wish to invite fresh players to do what they could not do,” Rohr said.

According to the Franco- German coach, time has gone when players who are not playing regularly in their team are invited to the national team and not minding they can not measure up, collect bonuses and allowancesb without working for it.

“The time is gone when a player comes for two matches, collects bonuses, allowances and ticket refund and does not measure up. You know we are building up a new team and the best way to do it is to use good players who are playing regularly for their teams and are ready to give us the desired result.

The former Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso handler explained that all countries preparing for world cup qualifiers are counting on their best players to pick a ticket to Russia 2018 and Nigeria won’t be an exception noting that the only way to pick the ticket ahead of such countries as Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia was to use players who are regular in their clubs and not fringe players whose fitness level cannot be determined.

“What we need now are players who can fight for first-team shirts and so make the team more competitive. It is only when that is done that the players will be more serious and even the regular ones will put in their best knowing that they can lose their positions if they fail to measure up”, he stressed.

With his present position, players like Israel-based midfielder Nosa Igiebor, Kingsley Madu from Zulte-Waregem of Belgium, Rangers goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel and Jamiu Alimi from Kano Pillars could fall into this bracket of “vacation players” who might no longer be invited to the national team.
