NFF loses N2.16bn CAF prize money


The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is losing $5,400,000USD (about N2.16billion) Confederation of African Football (CAF) prize monies for Nigeria’s non-participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Gabon and the continental cadet championships.


New prize monies for its elite tournaments released by CAF yesterday, show that winners of the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, will apart from lifting the trophy, pocket $4millionUSD as against the previous $1.5m prize money.

Super Eagles were stopped by the Pharaohs of Egypt from landing in Gabon, after also failing to be at the AFCON finals in Equatorial Guinea in 2015, to defend Nigeria’s title won in 2013 in South Africa under late Coach Stephen Keshi.

Similarly, an otherwise genial Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winning coach, Coach Emmanuel Amuneke, was carried away by his success and allowed his team to revolt on the eve of a crucial qualifier, thus Nigeria failed to qualify for the Africa U-20 Championship holding in Zambia from February 26-March 12 with $250,000 at stake.

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets were also stopped by Niger Republic from participating in the Africa U-17 Championship scheduled to hold in Madagascar from April 2-16, 2017, with $150,000 prize at stake for the winners.

However, Super Falcons are in line to contest for the $50,000 prize money and trophy as the African Women’s Nations Cup takes centre stage next month in Cameroun.

Meanwhile, either Enugu Rangers or Rivers United would pocket $2.5m and the giant trophy if they won the 2017 CAF Champions League next year as against the previous $1.5m, while FC IfeanyiUbah are in line to contest for the CAF Confederation Cup $1,250,000 champions’ prize money.

Supreme Court doesn’t need 21 justices – CJN

The acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has said appointing more judges or increasing the number of courtrooms are not the solutions to the problem of delayed justice dispensation in the country. The acting CJN said the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court would  remain congested so long as the number of appeals proceeding there from the high courts was not regulated. Justice Onnoghen also argued that it was erroneous to believe that delay at the Supreme Court was as a result of not having up to 21 Justices prescribed by the constitution. He noted hat even the United States of America, with a higher population, had only nine Supreme Court Justices. Trump ex-aide Paul Manafort 'offered to help Putin'

US President Donald Trump's one-time campaign chairman secretly worked for a Russian billionaire to assist President Vladimir Putin, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reports. Paul Manafort is said to have proposed a strategy to nullify anti-Russian opposition across former Soviet republics a decade ago.
