Dickson seeks character, ethics training for youths

Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, has called for a thorough training, which emphasises character; ethics and values among the youths, so as to enable them fully develop their potentials and render quality service to the society.

Dickson, who made this call at a dinner hosted by the Nigeria Fellowship of Evangelical Students (NIFES) in Abuja on Sunday, noted that it was difficult to talk about the greatness of a nation without talking about the values, character and knowledge of the young people.

“The greatness of a nation is the summation of the potential of the people in it, especially of its young people”, he said.

He observed that the academic training leading to the award of degrees, which he referred to as unidimensional, was not enough but that some basic values were important in building the human personality.

He, therefore, called for a multidimensional approach to training the youths in the country for proper grooming.

“As humans, we all work very hard to raise money to send our children to school and we all expect them to be first class graduates but this training is usually unidimensional.

We are not only about certificates and qualifications. There are so many other dimensions of the human potential that are as important as the first class degree we expect our young ones to graduate with and one of the most important is the issue of character building, ethics and values we expose them to,” he stressed.

While underscoring the importance of faith in the life of the Christian, Dickson, however, noted that there was a collapse in the essential Christian foundation introduced to us by the western civilisation today, saying that “they who introduced us to Christianity are now turning to other gods.”

This development, he added, was affecting Nigerians and wondered what Christians were afraid of.

“But some of us are very proud of our faith and whenever we see Christians gather to do things the body of Christ will be proud of, it is always a pleasure to be part of it,” he said.

Dickson congratulated NIFES for its vision that had lasted forty eight years as he called on the body of Christ to continue to wax stronger.

Dignitaries present at the event included the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was represented by the Chaplain of Aso Rock Villa, Pastor SeyiMalomo, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) boss, Ibim Semenitari, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), senior pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Church, Dr. Paul Enenche, and his wife, Dr. Becky Enenche, and many others.

POLITICS Paul Manafort with reporters in a Republican Convention last month Paul Manafort, installed to run  Donald J. Trump ’s operation after the firing of his original campaign manager, handed in his resignation on Friday, signifying the latest tumult to engulf the candidate, whose standing in the polls has steadily dropped since the  Republican Party ’s convention in July. Mr. Manafort left nearly a week after a New York Times report  about problems within the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign helped precipitate a leadership shake-up. His departure reflects repeated efforts to steady a campaign that has been frequently roiled by the unpredictable behavior of its tempestuous first-time candidate. Those news reports were blotting out much of the press coverage of th...
