Dalung tasks govs to channel security funds into sports

State governors have been called upon to invest in sporting activities as a way to minimising crime among the youths.

Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung, stated this during the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Air Force Games in Katsina State.

Dalung said most crimes committed today in Nigeria were perpetrated by the youths, and that investing in sports would go a long way to reducing the problem.

He said if governors could invest 50 percent of their security votes to sporting activities, the problem of crime in society would not only be reduced, but “states would be close to heaven.”

He called on youths to embrace sporting activities rather than engage in crimes like insurgency, robbery and kidnapping.

The minister said at the end of the Air Force games, government hopes to harvest good athletes that would represent the country at the 2020 Olympic Games.

He commended security agencies for their role in ensuring peace, and for contributing immensely to the development of sporting activities in the country.

The games which were formally opened yesterday evening, had begun with football matches under an elimination series over the weekend.

A total of 750 athletes are participating in the sporting activity, with the event expected to round up by this weekend.

Conte: Chelsea must learn to kill matches

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says his side must learn to kill off matches quicker following their 3-2 League Cup win over Bristol Rovers. Michy Batshuayi scored two goals either side of a Victor Moses strike at Stamford Bridge to send the home side into the third round, but they were given a fright when the visitors twice halved a two-goal deficit through Peter Hartley and an Ellis Harrison penalty. The victory is Conte's third in competitive matches as Chelsea boss, following 2-1 wins over West Ham and Watford in the Premier League - both of which came about thanks to late goals from Diego Costa. And the former Italy boss wants his players to become more ruthless in their approach in order to prevent similarly nervy encounters in future. "These games are very tough," he told BBC Radio London Sport. "When you dominate the game, you must kill the game. In this case, we didn't do this. "It's a pity because when you're playing very well, creating a lot...
