Yuletide: Niger gets 2,000 NSCDC officers

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps ( NSCDC) has deployed no fewer than 2,000 personnel to provide security during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year festivities in Niger.

Mr Philip Ayuba, the commandant of the corps in the state, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, capital of Niger on Monday.

He said that plain-cloth security personnel had been deployed in all motor parks, public buildings and recreational centres to gather intelligence reports that would strengthen security situation in the state.

The commandant assured the residents of the state that the security measures already in place would guarantee peaceful atmosphere during the celebrations.

“We have adopted various forms of security strategies that will guarantee peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the celebrations, “ he said.

Ayuba said that specialised units involved in crime management had been deployed in identified areas inside and outside the state capital, to deal with any unforeseen eventualities.

He called on the public to volunteer credible information that would assist the law enforcement agencies to protect lives and property in the State.

It will be recalled that the Governor Abubakar Bello has appealed to Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to help sustain peace at the grassroots in the stat

He said that the state, with the largest land mass in the country, needed deployment of more NSCDC personnel in certain local government areas.

He said: “Niger state is a tenth of the country; the largest in terms of land mass. It will take you over 8 hours to travel from one end of the state to another.

“We need more of your men to help us maintain security in most of our councils.

“Whenever there are security challenges in any of our neighbouring states, residents of border villages to these states are the worst hit.

“We need your officers and men at this level to help curtail any incursion and help sustain the peace being enjoyed in the state.”

The governor assured the commandant-general that his administration would look after the welfare of the personnel posted to the state, in addition to providing office accommodation for the comma.
