Registered domain names in Nigeria hit 3,483


Domain Name Registrations and Renewals at the registry, Nigeria Internet Registration Association, NiRA, continued to be on the increase standing currently at 3,483 at the end of October.

The latest statistics, which was released in the third quarter report of the association showed that on a monthly basis and yearly there was an increase in registration on a yearly basis.

According to the association, the domain names registered and renewed in October 2016 was 5,306, which is more than the registration in October 2015 of 3,450 and that it almost double the registration in October 2014 of 2,717.

A further analysis of the report showed that registration in the month of September rose from 1,531 in 2014 to 1,975 in 2015 and then to 3,236 while renewals increased from 839 in 2014 to 1,347 in 2015 and then to 1,679 in 2016.

The trend, which is also reflected in October, showed that registration increased from 1,581 in 2014 to 2,101 in 2015 and then to 3,483 while for renewal, the trend was the same showed that in 2014 it went from 1,136 to 1,349 in 2015 and then to 1,823 in 2016.

President of NiRA, Mr. Sunday Folayan while commenting on the report said that the Internet works because of the cooperation and ingenuity of many people in a loosely defined management structure called the
Internet Governance.

He said that there was the need for more active participation of Nigerians in Internet Governance stressing that the Internet is governed by a multi-stakeholder group in a conscious based bottom up process.

He noted that it is private sector led while the government supports the initiative with a sound policies and guidelines saying that it has been reported severally that there are over 92Million Nigerians online.

“This is bigger than the population of a number of countries. It is important that people should not be gagged but free to express themselves openly on the Internet but responsibly”, he said.
