The Senator representing Niger East Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Barrister David Umaru has noted that the Gender Equality bill at the Upper chamber of the National Assembly does not require debate for it to be passed in view of the critical role played by women in Nigeria.
The lawmaker insisted that there is no family, either as a father or husband that can function adequately without a woman, while describing them as the pillar of most families.
Speaking at an occasion while donating sewing machines and some undisclosed amount of cash to 450 women that graduated from skill acquisition training in fashion designing and tailoring under the sponsorship of his constituency office, Umaru commended his colleagues for the great support given to the bill that has currently passed its second reading.
He maintained, “In every culture and religion, we cannot do without women and this is the reason why, I think there should not be any debate on the bill in the first instance except for the records. This is why I give priority to women empowerment.”
The lawmaker explained that the programme was initiated by his wife, Mrs Tabitha Umaru, as part of effort aimed at uplifting the financial status of women in the society within his constituency.
Advising the beneficiaries against selling their machines and putting to good use the cash donation given to them, he said, “We will continue to monitor the progress of the beneficiaries so that we can give necessary support if there is the need”.
