Makarfi, Sheriff PDP factions reconcile

The two factional leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senators Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff, yesterday agreed to end the party’s crisis.

This came about after the rival leaders met in Abuja, where they reviewed the state of affairs in the party.

The two leaders jointly signed a statement, where they said they had agreed to consult with other relevant organs of the party for a final resolution of the leadership crisis.

“The meeting was held in a most convivial atmosphere of brotherhood and understanding in the best interest of our great country and the sustenance of our multi-party democracy,” the statement said.

Deputy National Chairman of the Sheriff faction, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh and Secretary of the Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee, Senator Ben Obi, also addressed a joint statement, where they unanimously confirmed the truce for reconciliation.

Their statement, titled “Rejuvenating the PDP” reads: “This is without prejudice to all outstanding matters in court. At a meeting held this morning between the two of us, a holistic review of the state of affairs of our great party, PDP, was deliberated upon.

“In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party, the PDP since the loss of the 2015 general elections, after 16 years of uninterrupted leadership at the center, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds, and bring about a united, focused and constructive opposition party that can bring sanity to our democratic process, bringing relief to the teeming supporters of our great party, the PDP and, to the benefit of our country.

“Based on the above, we have both agreed to: consult widely with all relevant organs of the party; set up a joint committee that will carry out a holistic reconciliation of all aggrieved segments of our party across the country and in Diaspora; pursue the vision of the founding fathers of our great party. “Details of all the above will be made public soonest.

“We therefore call on all party members to remain calm and refrain from any actions and utterances that could further bring about divisions or dispute

Conte: Chelsea must learn to kill matches

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says his side must learn to kill off matches quicker following their 3-2 League Cup win over Bristol Rovers. Michy Batshuayi scored two goals either side of a Victor Moses strike at Stamford Bridge to send the home side into the third round, but they were given a fright when the visitors twice halved a two-goal deficit through Peter Hartley and an Ellis Harrison penalty. The victory is Conte's third in competitive matches as Chelsea boss, following 2-1 wins over West Ham and Watford in the Premier League - both of which came about thanks to late goals from Diego Costa. And the former Italy boss wants his players to become more ruthless in their approach in order to prevent similarly nervy encounters in future. "These games are very tough," he told BBC Radio London Sport. "When you dominate the game, you must kill the game. In this case, we didn't do this. "It's a pity because when you're playing very well, creating a lot...
