Group drags Amnesty International to ICC over report

Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, CESJET, has dragged Amnesty International before the International Criminal Court ICC, over its report which accused Nigeria of human rights violation.

CESJET through its lawyers, Mr. Wolfgang Bendler and Edward Omaga, accused Amnesty International of promoting and protecting human rights, a development which it said has been derailed into an incendiary and partisan goal.

In a petition submitted to the office of The Prosecutor, International Criminal Court, ICC, Madame Fatou Bensouda, the group said going by its recent comments and stand over certain issues, it appears that they have taken side.

Part of the petition reads: “Against the background of its 2015/2016 annual report in which it raised questions on the appalling human rights situation across the globe and scores Nigeria low as an abuser of human rights, it is pertinent to state that the ombudsman mission of Amnesty International in promoting and protecting human rights has been derailed into an incendiary and partisan goal.

“For now, lopsided views, short-sighted and hasty conclusions - some not backed by facts - are Amnesty International’s hallmark instead of bold objectivity in pursuit of its vision. “No doubt, international law and human norms demand that Nigeria as a state and Nigerians as a people eschew every form of man’s inhumanity to man. Hence perennial cases of police brutality, highhandedness by security officials, a criminal justice system which has failed, with many innocent citizens wasting away in illegal detentions, and statebacked maltreatment of citizens, call for holistic reforms of the structures and institutions of democracy.

“Indeed, there may be real or perceived cases of arbitrary brutalisation of persons by security officials, but these cases must not be exaggerated to denigrate the sovereignty and humanity of a nation.” CESJET said records would show that the murderous terrorist group called Boko Haram had killed more than 20,000 Nigerians in cold blood since 2012.

The group also said the Niger Delta Avengers have continued to breach the peace while destroying the infrastructure of Nigeria. CESJET said:

“They do this on the strength of Amnesty International’s affirmation that terrorist groups are untouchable by the Nigerian government.

“As at today, the complaint dated 1st September, 2016 has successfully dispatched to the International Criminal Court and acknowledged at the Office of the Prosecutor.

“The crux of the complaint is to expose and bring Amnesty International to book for the heinous crimes it has been propagating in Nigeria, to wit; wanton abuse of human rights by terrorists.

“It is obvious that Amnesty International now has a huge credibility problem, judging from its inability to find a balance between the civil liberties of people and the national security needs of sovereign independent nations as evidenced in its retreat from its guiding principle that “Amnesty International neither supports nor condemns a government policy of using military force in fighting against armed opposition movements, when an opposition group tortures or kills its captives, takes hostages, or commits deliberate and arbitrary killings.”

The suicide bomber himself was a child aged between 12 and 14, President Recep Tayyip One woman lost four children in the attack, Emine Arhan, said yesterday: “If it wasn’t for my only surviving child, I would have killed myself.” Another victim was a nine-year-old girl who had stayed on at the party to see the bride after her parents had left, according to reports. A disproportionately large number of women and children were killed in the attack because it targeted henna night, a part of the celebration attended mainly by women and children. IMMUNITY BILL: A MISPLACED PRIORITY

Certainly, it is not a matter of conjecture to say that the undue interference and unpalatably flagrant disregard to separation of power by the executive tier of government has raised more questions than answers on the integrity of this government and the commitment of the leadership to truly push for the genuine change in line with democratic norms all over the world.   Fatunde Bamidele Samuel (VEGA) writes from lagos. Recently, the society was encapsulated with shocking news of pension bill for the National Assembly members. However, the bill was dead on arrival. This is nothing but another heinous attempt to permanently ground the country that is already suffering from the bloodsucking bedbugs (NASS) and former governors pensions. These are almost sucking the finances of this country dry; if and only if we could act fast to salvage it then we can only hope the existence of Nigeria will not be history. The recent exploit of the National Assembly is evi...

Breaking News: Paul Manafort Quits Donald Trump’s Campaign After Tumultuous Run

POLITICS Paul Manafort with reporters in a Republican Convention last month Paul Manafort, installed to run  Donald J. Trump ’s operation after the firing of his original campaign manager, handed in his resignation on Friday, signifying the latest tumult to engulf the candidate, whose standing in the polls has steadily dropped since the  Republican Party ’s convention in July. Mr. Manafort left nearly a week after a New York Times report  about problems within the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign helped precipitate a leadership shake-up. His departure reflects repeated efforts to steady a campaign that has been frequently roiled by the unpredictable behavior of its tempestuous first-time candidate. Mr. Manafort was also dogged  by reports about secretive efforts  he made to help the former pro-Russian government in Ukraine, where he has worked on and off over several years. Those news reports were blotting out much of the press coverage of th...
