Buhari goes to New York for 71st session of UNGA

President Muhammadu Buhari will leave Abuja for New York, United States, this weekend to participate in the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) holding from September 19-23.

The President will deliver Nigeria’s statement at the opening of the General Debate of the Assembly, on the theme: The Sustainable Development Goals: a Universal Push to Transform our World.” According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, Buhari would also attend a high-level summit, hosted by the UN, on “Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants’’.

The summit, which is the first of its kind organised by the General Assembly at the Heads of State and Government level, is expected to come up with a blueprint for a better international response to enhance protection of migrants and refugees.

While in New York for the annual gathering of world leaders, the President would attend series of meetings as well as side events, which are of significant interest to Nigeria. He would deliver a keynote address on “Taking Climate Action Towards Sustainable Development in Nigeria and the Lake Chad Basin.”

Leaders of member countries of the Lake Chad Basin would attend this important side event organised by the Nigerian government to highlight the urgent need to mobilise international response to the distressing situation in the Lake Chad Basin, where over nine million people need humanitarian assistance.

The President would equally participate in an event hosted by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- Moon on “Ending Need in the Lake Chad” On the margins of the 71st UNGA, Buhari would sign the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and participate in activities commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Declaration of the Right to Development. The President would attend the Clinton Global Initiative as well as the United Nations Private Sector Forum on Business and Global Goals organised by the Secretary General.

He would lead discussions at the United States-Africa Business Forum devoted to investing in Nigeria.

Before returning to Nigeria, the President would hold bilateral meetings with some world leaders in furtherance of the administration’s commitment in ameliorating the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the country.

The discussions would also focus on the President’s longstanding commitment to returning peace and security in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria, restoring calm to the Niger Delta and attracting more investments to develop critical infrastructure and revamp the Nigerian economy.

Supreme Court doesn’t need 21 justices – CJN

The acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has said appointing more judges or increasing the number of courtrooms are not the solutions to the problem of delayed justice dispensation in the country. The acting CJN said the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court would remain congested so long as the number of appeals proceeding there from the high courts was not regulated. Justice Onnoghen also argued that it was erroneous to believe that delay at the Supreme Court was as a result of not having up to 21 Justices prescribed by the constitution. He noted hat even the United States of America, with a higher population, had only nine Supreme Court Justices. Trump ex-aide Paul Manafort 'offered to help Putin'

US President Donald Trump's one-time campaign chairman secretly worked for a Russian billionaire to assist President Vladimir Putin, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reports. Paul Manafort is said to have proposed a strategy to nullify anti-Russian opposition across former Soviet republics a decade ago. AP says documents and interviews support its claims about Mr Manafort. Mr Manafort has insisted that he never worked for Russian interests.
