PDP chieftain advises Buhari on anti-graft war

Businessman and politician, Dr. Kayode Oduoye, yesterday said Nigerians appear unimpressed with efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration at eliminating corruption, because so far, all his moves to fight graft are not having direct positive impact on the populace.

Oduoye said with the growing level of poverty in the country, efforts to “kill” corruption by President Buhari is obviously not sitting well with people he is serving because they are daily more pauperised.

Speaking with newsmen in Osogbo, Oduoye, a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, made allusion to efforts to fight corruption by the previous administrations which he said culminated in the establishment of some key institutions that are today benefitting the general populace.

He mentioned introduction of NNPC Mega Stations across the country by Obasanjo administration, when corrupt acts nearly stifle life out of distribution network of the NNPC as an example of how to fight corruption and at the same time, grow economy.

“Another one that readily comes to mind is introduction of BVN and TSA by Jonathan administration. These two initiatives are meant to fight corruption and they are today helping to fight graft by the man that takes over,” he added.

According to him, an average Nigerian will appreciate Buhari’s efforts to rid the country of corruption more, if through his anti corruption crusade, more policemen are being recruited or more prisons are built to accommodate those that might fail anti corruption test before court.

“Just imagine that more prisons are being constructed by Buhari to serve as abode for those that would fail to prove their innocence before court. Jobs will be created for people. Increase in number of prisons will mean more warders will be employed.

“Fighting corruption when jobs are daily being lost and cost of food items at cut throat will never catch the fancy or interest hungry Nigerians. I advise those in government to go to streets and feel the pulse of people about the situation of the country. They are disillusioned”, Oduoye concluded.

Conte: Chelsea must learn to kill matches

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says his side must learn to kill off matches quicker following their 3-2 League Cup win over Bristol Rovers. Michy Batshuayi scored two goals either side of a Victor Moses strike at Stamford Bridge to send the home side into the third round, but they were given a fright when the visitors twice halved a two-goal deficit through Peter Hartley and an Ellis Harrison penalty. The victory is Conte's third in competitive matches as Chelsea boss, following 2-1 wins over West Ham and Watford in the Premier League - both of which came about thanks to late goals from Diego Costa. And the former Italy boss wants his players to become more ruthless in their approach in order to prevent similarly nervy encounters in future. "These games are very tough," he told BBC Radio London Sport. "When you dominate the game, you must kill the game. In this case, we didn't do this. "It's a pity because when you're playing very well, creating a lot...
