Group seeks sponsors for students’ entrepreneurship contest


A not-for-profit making organisation, Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN) has solicited for sponsors for the senior secondary school entrepreneurship competition known as “National Company of the Year Competition.”

The competition according to the organiser is designed to empower secondary school students across Nigeria with skills and trade that can earn them income while still in school.

Making the appeal at the event to unveil the winner in Lagos, the Keynote speaker, Chief Executive Officer, JA Africa, Mrs. Elizabeth Bintliff revealed that the competition had produced some of the largest numbers of wealth creators on the African continent, hence the need for government and individual supports.

Bintliff encouraged the youth to dream big; create solutions where problems exist and operate with a high sense of integrity”, stressing that they must push through with their visions “despite the obstacles we face in Africa you hold the key to successfully rebuilding our nations’ economies.”

She disclosed that JAN was playing a pivotal role in rebuilding the economy from the ground-up by imbibing the entrepreneurial spirit in the youth at an early age.

While employing corporate Nigeria for support, she noted that JA Company Programme teaches Senior Secondary students how to start and run their own business from start to liquidation, adding that they sell shares, raise start-up capital, pay dividends to shareholders and use 10 per cent of their profit for a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.

This year’s competition showcased ingenuity in areas of technology and the use of recycled products, and witnessed a rise in young women exploring areas of technology.

The edition was won by Team Innovative Minds from Caro Favoured College, Ajegunle, Lagos. The members of Innovative Minds produced Neon advertising lights as their main product and black shoe polish, arts/crafts as their mini-products.

The revenue generated from their miniproducts was used to produce the user friendly NEON Light which was sold to businesses within their community to support their advertising needs.

Their passion, sales pitch, accounting and community service project was undeniable to the judges and crowd present and they were declared the winner of the 2016 National Company of the Year Competition.

The Innovative Minds will proceed to Zimbabwe this December to compete against their fellow JA Africa member nations for the title of JA Africa Company of the Year.

England have been fined 45,000 Swiss francs for several breaches of Fifa's rules about displaying political symbols, the sport's governing body have confirmed.
