FUNAAB VC blames crisis on vested, external interest

Prof. Oyewole
Following a call by the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, for his removal and dissolution of the governing council of the institution, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Professor Olusola Oyewole, Thursday blamed the crisis rocking the university on an unbridled interest of some individuals within the university community.

Oyewole who spoke with journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, also blamed in particular, the students’ agitation for a better security arrangement as well as SSANU’s call for his removal on “internal politics,” but stressed that he would eventually be vindicated.
The VC who expressed great surprise at the attitude of the students of the university during the recent protest which witnessed the vandalism and burning of over 60 vehicles, maintained that students of the institution have a record for good rehabilitabehaviour when compared with those of other universities in Nigeria.
Said he: “It is just that there may be some vested, external interest in what happened. Our students are naturally peaceful; they are not used to those type of activities but for some external influences which we suspect.
“I have tried my best for the system; we’ve had this type of experience in this university, when it’s getting to the end of tenure of the vice chancellor. But by God’s grace, we’ll get over it.”

Oyewole, however, urged the agitating labour unions and students of the institution to give peace a chance.
Emphasising that the university management had always been alive to its responsibility of securing lives and properties of staff and students, Oyewole stated that the university planned to convene a stakeholders’ meeting with landlords of the all the hostels located off campus with a view to addressing the current security challenges in the communities.

He also disclosed that the university management has set up a committee to look into the remote and immediate causes of the recent protest by students which led to wanton destruction of properties.

Conte: Chelsea must learn to kill matches

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says his side must learn to kill off matches quicker following their 3-2 League Cup win over Bristol Rovers. Michy Batshuayi scored two goals either side of a Victor Moses strike at Stamford Bridge to send the home side into the third round, but they were given a fright when the visitors twice halved a two-goal deficit through Peter Hartley and an Ellis Harrison penalty. The victory is Conte's third in competitive matches as Chelsea boss, following 2-1 wins over West Ham and Watford in the Premier League - both of which came about thanks to late goals from Diego Costa. And the former Italy boss wants his players to become more ruthless in their approach in order to prevent similarly nervy encounters in future. "These games are very tough," he told BBC Radio London Sport. "When you dominate the game, you must kill the game. In this case, we didn't do this. "It's a pity because when you're playing very well, creating a lot...
