Obasanjo charges advocacy groups on accountability

Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has charged non governmental organisations and foundations involved in charity works to be more transparent and accountable in the utilisation of funds entrusted in their care for charity works.

Speaking at the launch of the Cancer Awareness and Diagonistic Centres in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the former president opined that these would further encourage public spirited individuals and organisations to get more involved in philanthropic gestures as obtained in advanced countries.

The event was organised by Primus Torchbearers, a philanthropy and advocacy organisation, which was marking its 40th anniversary and plans to raise funds both locally and internationally to establish cancer awareness and diagonistic centres in Abeokuta and the other two senatorial districts of Ogun State.

The event tagged ‘No to Cancer, Fund Me’ While acknowledging the efforts of such foundations, including the Tony Elumelu Foundation and Jim Ovia Foundation, Obasanjo added that it was imperative on wealthy and public spirited individuals to complement the efforts of government at all levels to address some of the challenges plaguing the society.

Some of the dignitaries at the event included a former Senator, Dr. Femi Okunrounmu and a former Chief Medical Director of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Opeoluwa Adekunle, who was the Chairman of the Planning Committee of the event.

IMMUNITY BILL: A MISPLACED PRIORITY

Certainly, it is not a matter of conjecture to say that the undue interference and unpalatably flagrant disregard to separation of power by the executive tier of government has raised more questions than answers on the integrity of this government and the commitment of the leadership to truly push for the genuine change in line with democratic norms all over the world.   Fatunde Bamidele Samuel (VEGA) writes from lagos. Recently, the society was encapsulated with shocking news of pension bill for the National Assembly members. However, the bill was dead on arrival. This is nothing but another heinous attempt to permanently ground the country that is already suffering from the bloodsucking bedbugs (NASS) and former governors pensions. These are almost sucking the finances of this country dry; if and only if we could act fast to salvage it then we can only hope the existence of Nigeria will not be history. The recent exploit of the National Assembly is evi...
